Roanoke (24-14-7) broke a two-game losing streak by winning its second straight at Charlotte. The Express played a man short because Head Coach Frank Anzalone benched leading scorer Oleg Yashin and right wing Rouslan Toujikov.
The Express never trailed as Ilya Dubkov opened the scoring from the edge of the crease in the first period by putting in a rebound of Tony Szabo's shot. Jeff Jestadt kept the play alive by making a centering pass while down on his knees along the left-wing boards. The Express has outscored opponents 17-2 during the first period in the last eight games.
Charlotte's Daniel Ruoho tied the score a minute into the second period on a disputed goal.
The Checkers' Matt Robbins put the puck on the edge of the crease, where Ruoho tipped it through Gagnon's pads. Television replays suggested the puck may not have crossed the goal. The goal light never was lit and the puck stopped on the line before Roanoke's Mark Luger swatted it away, but referee Chris Cozzan called it a goal.
Three minutes later, Marty Schriner's wrist shot gave the Express the lead for good.
Roanoke scored twice more in a 30-second stretch late in the second period on goals by Craig Herr and Szabo to make it 4-1.
Jestadt and Jason Clarke scored third-period goals for the Express while Charlotte's Sergei Berdnikov scored on a power play breakaway after Gagnon tripped over the Checkers' Joe Crowley in the crease.
