FOR VA, WHITETAIL DEER, YOU CAN'T BEAT SYSTEM

It was an innocent affair, that fist deer contest held by the Virginia Peninsula Sportsman's Association in the fall of 1940. "Shag" Rutter Jr., the association's president, simply looked at the deer heads submitted and determined the first-, second- and third-place entries. It was close to being a beauty contest.

As it turned out, there were no fistfights among the participants. Fist place was an easy call, because Tom Barclay of Newport News had entered a dominating 18-pointer. His deer already had gained fame as the "Big Buck of Surry County" in a Virginia Wildlife story. The author was George B. Johnson, a big-game hunter who lived in Newport News.
