POWER FAILURE OPENS CELLS

Six officers and six inmates were injured Sunday in a disturbance at the District of Columbia's Lorton Correctional Facility in Northern Virginia.

Spokesman Walter Hill said the district's corrections department secured a maximum-security cell block where the disturbance began following a brief power outage about 1 a.m.

When electricity was restored, 88 inmates were accidentally freed when locks on their cells apparently opened.

Hill said inmates seriously wounded two guards in an altercation. They were treated at Fairfax Hospital and released.

Three inmates were treated at D.C. General Hospital, while four other guards and three other inmates were hurt but did not need hospital treatment.
