With this morning's lows expected to dwindle to single digits, and winds still blasting at 15 to 25 mph, the National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for the Roanoke area Sunday. Wind chills were expected to reach 25 below zero at times.
It's expected to be mostly sunny today, but high temperatures still won't climb out of the 20s, and winds will be gusting to more than 25 mph. Several area school systems are opening an hour or two late as a result.
Charles Edwards of the weather service in Roanoke said the low pressure system that slid by Southwest Virginia this weekend and still is dumping foot upon foot of snow on New England is behind the chilly air and high winds. The storm gained intensity and now is sucking cold air down from Canada.
Tuesday, though, should be less windy and not quite as cold.
