Most men.

62% of men have smoked, only 43% of women have.

Who's puffed in the past week?

The young.

Generation X is the only age group where a majority still smoke.

Ages 18-29: 52%

Ages 30-49: 43%

Ages 50-64: 35%

Age 65 and up: 17%

The undereducated.

Smoking drops as education rises.

High school drop-outs: 54%

High school graduates: 38%

Some college: 37%

College graduates: 25%

Advanced degrees: 8%

The poor.

Smoking drops as income rises, too.

Under $10,000: 56%

$10,000 to $19,999: 46%

$20,000 to $29,999: 45%

$30,000 to $39,999: 23%

$40,000 and up: 22%

Among those still smoking:

Men and women, blacks and white light up at the same rate.

Of those who say they've smoked in the past week, 74% say they've tried to quit.

Smokin' at the speedway

52% of Franklin County Speedway-goers say they've smoked in the past week.

34% of Center in the Square-goers say they've smoked in the past week.

The Roanoke Valley Poll was conducted by Roanoke College's Center for Community Research and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points. Among demographic subgroups, the margin may be higher.
