TAKE NOTE

February is American Heart Month, and several health organizations have planned events to note the occasion and to fight the nation's biggest killer, cardiovascular disease, cause of death to almost 1 million Americans a year.

Montgomery Regional Hospital will have a cardiac risk assessment Feb. 24 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and a cardiology department open house Feb. 14, when visitors can meet the staff, pick up cardiac information, view video tapes and participate in a relaxation session.

Giles Memorial and Radford Community Hospitals are sponsoring a cardiac risk assessment screening Feb. 25 at each facility. The cost is $20. At the last screening, in October, 66 people participated, 52 percent of whom had high blood pressure and 41 percent of whom had high cholesteral. Fifty-three percent had at least one risk factor for heart disease

Participants will receive a personalized report, a wallet refercence card and information on heart disease prevention. To register for the Giles Memorial Hospital screening, call (800) 422-8482. Call 731-2380 to register for the Radford Community Hospital.
