RADFORD MAN CHARGED IN ARSON OF CEMETERY BUILDING

A Radford man has been charged with setting fire to a cemetery storage building last month, police said.

A house being used to store lawnmowers and other caretaking equipment for the WestView Cemetery on Fifth Street was set on fire at about 12:45 a.m. on Jan. 26, said Radford Capt. Gary Harmon.

An investigation revealed the fire was arson, and after a joint investigation by Fire Marshal Cabby Whitt and city police, police arrested Kenneth D. Brightwell, 25, of the 1500 block of Fifth Street. Harmon said Brightwell had worked at the cemetery in the past. Brightwell was charged with arson, bond was set at $5,000 and a trial date is pending.

The house and equipment incurred an estimated $10,000 in damages.
