MAGNA VISTA UNABLE TO STAY WITH SALEM

Kevin Garst scored 10 points and Matt Woolwine added eight in the decisive third quarter as Salem cruised to an 84-70 non-district boys' basketball victory over Magna Vista on Monday night.

The Spartans outscored the Warriors 29-18 in the third period, adding to a three-point halftime lead, as Salem won its ninth game of the year.

Garst was the high-scorer for the Spartans with 21 points and Woolwine finished with 19. Chad Pendleton chipped in 16 points for Salem (9-7) and freshman Hershel Thomas added 10.

Tony Haywood led the Warriors with a game-high 24 points and Jermaine Simmons poured in 19 in the losing effort.

Patrick County 71

Carroll County 59

STUART - Corey Reynolds scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Cougars to a non-district victory.

Patrick County (6-10) pulled away by making 10 of 14 free throws in the final quarter. Ray Hylton added 12 points and brother Ben had 10 for Patrick County.

Carroll County (4-13), which was down eight going into the fourth quarter, tried to comeback behind Matt Larrowe, who scored 10 of his team-high 14 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough. Kevin Dalton added 10 for the Cavaliers.

Graham 47

BLACKSBURG- The Indians held the G-Men to just three free throws in the first quarter and blasted Graham in a non-district game.

The G-Men could find no answer to the Indians' defense, failing to score a field goal until the 5:20 mark in the second period.

Anthony Wheeler also proved to be unstoppable for the Indians, scorching Graham for a game-high 24 points. Trent Peterson added 11 for Blacksburg (6-10).

Graham's (7-8) highest scorer was Rusty Rose with eight points.

Roanoke Valley Chr. 48

Carlisle 22

The Eagles outscored visiting Carlisle by 14 points in the fourth quarter to down the winless Chiefs 48-22 in a Blue Ridge Conference game Monday night.

Roanoke Valley Christian (11-5, 6-3) was led by Gina Guthrie's game-high 22 points and 11 steals. Rebecca Bryant also aided RVC, pulling down 16 rebounds and scoring six points.

Brooke Holyfield led Carlisle (0-14, 0-9) with 12 points.
