NAMES ON CAMPUS

STANFORD J. RITCHEY, former dean of the College of Human Resources, is the interim director of the Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology. Ritchey, who retired in August after 31 years at the university, will serve in a part-time capacity through the spring semester while a search committee seeks a permanent replacement.

CLIFFORD W. RANDALL, an endowed professor of civil engineering, received Maryland's Governor's Salute to Excellence for his efforts to protect and improve the Chesapeake Bay.

Randall has researched pollutants of the bay from water treatment plants and other sources since the early 1970s.

History professor, RANDY SHIFFLETT, received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers to complete a social and cultural history of Civil War Fredericksburg. He also was awarded a grant from the Virginia Tech Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching to prepare a computer-based course on the history of the Southern states.

ROGER EKIRCH, professor of history, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to direct a 1995 summer seminar for teachers on the peopling of early America.

JOHN CAIRNS, University Distinguished Professor of environmental biology, will provide input to the President Clinton's Council on Sustainable Development. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

THOMAS H. OLLENDICK, professor of psychology, is the new president of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy, a non-profit organization of professionals and students concerned with the application of behavioral and cognitive sciences understand human behavior and enhance human lives.

Orkin Pest Control recently honored BILL ROBINSON, professor of entomology, with its 1994 Award for Research Excellence and a $3000 research grant. Robinson was selected for significant contributions to the field of urban pest management.
