SIGNUPS NOW FOR SENIOR OLYMPICS

The 1995 NEW RIVER VALLEY SENIOR OLYMPICS don't happen until April 17-19, but the Feb. 27 registration deadline for medal eligibility is almost upon us. In addition to field events, Senior Olympics also offers a chance for seniors to compete in golf, miniature golf, bowling, cards, checkers, horseshoes and other events.

Roanoke fitness guru Artie Levin puts in a guest appearance April 19 at the Blacksburg Community Center, sponsored by the Radford Community Hospital Wellness Center.

To be in the running for awards, contestants must complete a registration form and pay the required fee by Feb. 27. Those who register after that date may not compete for medals. No refunds are made after the deadline.

Forms are available at area senior centers and recreation departments. Return forms to Sherry Kostric, Christiansburg Senior Center, P.O. Box 599, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Volunteers also are needed to help manage the events. For details or to volunteer, call 382-8173.

SENIOR GATHERINGS

Today, 9:30-11 a.m., Blacksburg News and Views group discusses "Social Security: Its History and Outlook." Group meets Second and fourth Wednesdays each month in the game room, Blacksburg Community Center. 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Vernon Baldwin, 552-5845, or Joy Herbert, 961-1134.

Friday, 1 p.m., Bill Winfrey, Blacksburg's director of parks and recreation, discusses the Senior Center Study Committee now being formed. Winfrey talks at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Seniors also may put in their two cents' worth about programs they'd like to see. 961-1134.

A free coffee-brunch get together is Monday, 10 a.m.-noon, in the activity room Blacksburg Community Center. Those planning to attend should call Joy Herbert, 961-1134, by Friday.

The Pulaski seniors' monthly Round Table Discussion and Luncheon is Tuesday, Valentine's Day, 11 a.m., Pulaski Senior Center, 106 N Washington Ave. Dave Murray of Warm Hearth Village speaks. Reservations end Monday. Lunch is $2. 980-1000.

The Radford chapter, American Association of Retired Persons, meets for a potluck supper Feb. 15, 5 p.m., at the Radford Senior Center. 27 First St.

Today, the Christiansburg morning group visits Heritage Hall at 10 a.m. The afternoon group goes to English Meadow at 2 p.m.

Thursday, 1:30 p.m., the Blacksburg group works on the SHARE mailing at New River Community Action.

Monday, 2 p.m., the Shawsville Group visits Meadowbrook for a birthday party.

Tuesday, 2 p.m., the Warm Hearth Group holds a Valentine's Day party at Heritage Hall. The Joy Makers entertain. Desserts are welcome.

Feb. 15, the Christiansburg morning group visits Brook Meade at 10 a.m. The Christiansburg afternoon group visits Meadowbrook at 2 p.m.

Registration ends Friday for the American Association of Retired Persons ``55 Alive'' driving class for mature drivers, offered Feb. 15-16, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. It's $8.

The Dine 'Round Club meets Feb. 22, 12:30 p.m., at La Cafe, Main St., Pulaski.

Feb. 22, the monthly Dine Out Lunch Bunch visits Pargo's in Christiansburg. Free transportation leaves the center at 11:30 a.m., or diners may meet at the restaurant. Call 961-1134 by Feb. 17 if you plan to come along.

The quilted vest class starts Thursday, 1-3 p.m., and runs four weeks. It's $8 for seniors.

Friday, travel to Radford to see the classical guitar performance. Transportation and tickets for seniors, $5. The van leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 5:30 p.m.

Monday, visit the Fairview Center, Lynchburg. Transportation and lunch for seniors, $4. The van leaves the armory at 9 a.m.

Tuesday, 10 a.m., it's mystery movie time.

A free blood sugar screening is offered Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.-noon.

Blacksburg Electronic Village: Feb. 17, Steve Helm offers a free seminar on the Blacksburg Electronic Village (BEV). Transportation is available from the Blacksburg Community Center at 12:45 p.m. Sign up by Feb. 15.

Computer class: For budding senior computer enthusiasts, New River Community College offers a non-credit course, "Computers for Codgers," Saturdays, Feb. 18 and 25 and March 4, 11 and 18 1-4:15 p.m., 254 Rooker Hall, Dublin campus. Registration on a non-credit course application is required. The class is designed to reduce computer anxiety. Tuition is $51. Call 674-3613 for details.

1995 Needlework Exhibit: The deadline is April 21, at Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department, 95 College St., and at the Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St. both have applications.
