Radford heritage group to meet

RADFORD - The Radford Heritage Foundation holds its annual meeting and election of officers and new board members Sunday, 3-5 p.m., at the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St. The public is welcome.

John Kern, director of the Roanoke Regional Office, Virginia Department of Historic Resources, will speak on the importance of preserving the past.

Foundation president Lewis I. "Bud" Jeffries has said he will not seek re-election because of a busy schedule.

Charter memberships in the foundation are available until the Sunday meeting. Dues are $10 a year for individuals and organizations. Student memberships are $1.

Thumbody program seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed to conduct "I'm Thumbody" programs for New River Valley third graders.

A two-hour training session for volunteers is set for Feb. 22 from 3-5p.m. at Blacksburg United Methodist Church's education building, room 110.

Program materials will be provided. Participants will conduct a one-hour program to third graders that will help in developing self-worth. The program includes a game, video, printed materials, and a pin for each child.

Worker Protection Standard training

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer Worker Protection Standard training for agriculture workers, pesticide handlers and their employers Feb. 20 in the Community Room of the Bank of Floyd.

The Worker Protection Standard is a regulation issued by the Environmental Protection Agency to protect workers using pesticides on farms or in nurseries, greenhouses and forests.

Training for English-speaking workers begins at 2 p.m.; Spanish-speaking employee training begins at 3 p.m. Employers are required to attend.

Army ROTC eligibility

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech and Radford University students with two years of study remaining and no previous military experience may be eligible for the two-year Army ROTC program.

The program offers scholarships for in-state tuition. Free on-campus housing is also available at Radford University.
