THE CITADEL MAY MOVE UP TO 1-A FOOTBALL

The Citadel is thinking of moving to the big-school college football division.

The state military school, currently a member of the Division I-AA Southern Conference, said Tuesday it had formed a task force to review a potential move to Division I-A.

President Claudius E. Watts III said I-AA schools face severe financial challenges because larger I-A schools have been discouraged from playing their smaller rivals.

The NCAA requires the larger schools to have six Division I-A victories to qualify for a bowl game.

The task force includes members from the Association of Citadel Men and The Citadel faculty, as well as Charleston-area residents. It is expected to make its recommendations in the spring.

HOCKEY - American scores 1,000th point

Joe Mullen became the first American-born player to reach 1,000 points in the NHL when he assisted on two of the Pittsburgh Penguins' first three goals Tuesday night against Florida.

Mullen got his 999th point by assisting on Tomas Sandstrom's first-period goal, then got his 1,000th point with an assist on John Cullen's goal 28 seconds into the second period.

Mullen didn't take time off to celebrate, scoring his 482nd and 483rd career goals later in the second period to push his career total to 1,002 points.
