RICHMOND - A grand jury has cleared a city grocer of any criminal wrongdoing in the shooting of two robbery suspects.
Police said two teen-agers took money from Kinney's Food Market Jan. 31 and ordered its owner, Mark Hazelgrove, to lie on the floor.
After the youths left the store, Hazelgrove grabbed his 9 mm pistol and fired 15 shots outside at a car containing three juveniles. Most of the shots hit the car. He said he was trying only to stop the car.
One youth was hit in the shoulder and a second was hit in the leg. They were treated at a hospital and released to police. The three were 14, 16 and 17 years old.
Police have said the two youngest were brothers on their way in a stolen car from Philadelphia to their home in Charlotte, N.C.
Commonwealth's Attorney David Hicks had drafted indictments charging Hazelgrove with two counts of unlawful wounding, but the four-woman, three-man grand jury rejected the charges.

Portsmouth man dies in ski accident
HARRISONBURG - A 29-year-old Portsmouth man died Sunday in a skiing accident at the Massanutten Resort.
There apparently were no witnesses to the accident that killed Steven Fry, who was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Massanutten spokeswoman June Brinkman said.
Brinkman and the funeral home where the body was taken both declined at the family's request to release details about Fry.
A hospital administrator said an autopsy was performed but he could not release the findings. Brinkman said she was told Fry died of internal injuries, ``from an impact with something.''
``Now what he impacted with, we're not sure,'' she said.
Fry was found alone on a slope.

Multiple-slaying suspect back in Va.
RICHMOND - Christopher C. Goins, accused of slaying five people in a Richmond apartment complex in October, was returned to Richmond Tuesday after losing a fight to delay extradition from New York City.
Goins and his girlfriend, Monique Littlejohn, were flown to Richmond on a state police jet. The two arrived at police headquarters around 3:45 p.m. in separate unmarked cars and were escorted into the building wearing handcuffs, ankle shackles and bulletproof vests.
Goins, 20, faces five counts of capital murder for the Oct. 14 slayings of three children and two adults in a public housing complex.
Littlejohn will be charged with accessory before the fact. If convicted, she faces life in prison.

Sprinklers coming after fatal fire
PETERSBURG - The Southside Regional Medical Center's governing board has voted to install a $1.8 million sprinkler system, hospital officials said Tuesday.
The decision follows a New Year's Eve fire that left five people dead and several others hospitalized.
``The fire made it necessary to do the work,'' said Thomas Bridge, chairman of the Petersburg Hospital Authority. The authority has considered installing a new sprinkler system for some time, Bridge said.
Southside Regional currently has sprinklers in about 20 percent of its patient areas. The fourth floor, where the fire broke out, was not equipped with sprinklers.
