Gerald F. Hicks Caldwell, 44, was driving north on Virginia 311 about 7 miles north of New Castle when his car ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to a report filed by state Trooper C.A. Davidson. Caldwell died at the scene about 5:45 p.m.
No information was available on whether there were passengers in the car. Police said Caldwell was not wearing a seat belt.
