STAUNTON RIVER PULLS OFF UPSET

Staunton River gave its biggest rival, Liberty, at least a tie for the regular-season Seminole District boys' title by stunning Amherst County 68-65 on Tuesday night.

The Lancers' loss took a lot of the glitter off their game with Liberty on Friday. Amherst County (13-4 in the district and overall) must win all its games while Liberty loses them all to tie.

Staunton River (12-5, 12-5) is in a battle for second with 10 days left in the regular season.

Hunter Hoggatt hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to close the scoring. Staunton River's Jason Morgan missed a one-and-one with eight seconds left, but Mike Albritton's 3-point try for a tie missed.

Hoggatt led Staunton River with 25 points, Cornelius Foxx added 16 and Jeff English had 17. Staunton River led by 16 in the final period, but Amherst came back to take a one-point lead on two free throws by Richard Apperson, who had a game-high 27 points.

English drove the baseline and hit a jumper with 40 seconds left to put the Golden Eagles in front for good.

Staunton River had 18 field goals for the game and half of them were 3-point shots.
