ALLEGHANY PULLS UPSET

LOW MOOR Shrell Bolden and Jason Petty combined to score 15 of Alleghany's 22 fourth-quarter points as the Mountaineers handed Northside its first Blue Ridge District loss of the season, winning 71-62 on Tuesday night.

Bolden had nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, hitting five of six free throws, and Petty scored six of his eight points in the final quarter to lead Alleghany.

The Mountaineers (9-6 overall, 2-4 district) got 16 points from Donnie Costigan and 15 from James Hughes. Alleghany took advantage of its free-throw opportunities, making 22 of 34 attempts.

The Vikings struggled at the line, making only 14 of 30 free-throw attempts.

Northside (13-5, 6-1) was led by Maurice Garrison, who scored a game-high 21 points, but had only four in an 11-point Vikings fourth quarter. Karim Thompson added 17 points, but made only one of seven free-throw attempts and did not score in the fourth quarter.

Fieldale-Collinsville 56

COLLINSVILLE - Mike Martin scored 22 points and the Bulldogs took a big step toward the Piedmont District title with a victory over the Cavaliers.

Fieldale-Collinsville led 30-25 at halftime, but Martinsville (14-4, 14-2) charged back and made crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the victory and take a one-game advantage over Laurel Park in the district race.

Jeremy Wells added 12 points for Martinsville, including six in the fourth quarter.

Fieldale-Collinsville (13-6, 12-4) was paced by Matt Law with 17 points and Mancino Craighead with 11.

DRY FORK - Tyree Hairston scored 28 points in the second half as the Bengals slipped past the Trojans in double overtime in Piedmont District action.

Tyree Hairston finished with a game-high 29 points, but only had one in the first half. He scored 12 of Bassett's 13 third-quarter points and had eight in the fourth quarter.

Devonne Claybrook added 20 for the Bengals (11-6, 11-5) - all in the first half. Chris Hairston and Corie Manns added 10 each.

Tunstall (6-12, 4-12) was led by Ronta Harris, who scored 19 points, including a 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation to tie the score and send it into overtime. Linwood Petty added 13 points and Derrick Rogers and Lamont Strange had 12 each for the Trojans.

Glenvar 66

The Highlanders made 14 of 17 free-throw attempts in the final period to defeat the visiting Chargers and take sole possession of first place in the Pioneer District.

Glenvar (9-5, 5-1) got off to a hot start, outscoring Bath 16-5 in the opening quarter. The Highlanders opened it up to 36-25 by halftime.

The Chargers (10-5, 5-3) cut their deficit to two points in the second half, but could get no closer. Matt Williams paced Bath with 12 points and Todd Townsend had 10.

Glenvar was led by James Williams with 14 points. Nick Varney and Cory Willis added 11 each.

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues led from the start behind balanced scoring from Brandon Garrett, David Coleman, Nathan Floyd and Carl Sanderson in a Pioneer District victory over the Cougars.

Parry McCluer (13-6, 6-4) wa led by Garrett's 15 points. Coleman added 14, Floyd 13 and Sanderson 10.

Covington (9-6, 5-2) was paced by Erwin Twitty (15 points) and Mike Barber (11).

DAMASCUS - Travis Owens hit a bank shot, was fouled and made the free throw with two seconds left to lift the Cavaliers over the Indians in a Hogoheegee District game.

Owens scored six of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, including the final three points of the game, and Brandon Matheny had 12 of his 22 points in the final period to lift Holston (7-10, 5-8). Johnny Widener added 16 points for the Cavaliers, who did not win a game last season.

Rural Retreat (2-14, 2-10) was led by W.K. Smith, who scored 22 points - 14 in the first half.

Rockbridge County 42

The Terriers raced to a 20-point halftime lead and coasted to an easy Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Chris Childress hit 16 points and pulled in eight rebounds along with Kevin Tuck. Michael McGuire added 15 points for Byrd (14-3, 5-2). The victory, coupled with an upset of Northside by Alleghany, put the Terriers a game behind the Vikings in the district race.

Rockbridge County (0-16, 0-6) was paced by Ricky Wright with 11 points and Rob Hoyle with 10.

The Chiefs built a working margin with a run at the end of the first half and forced 21 Eagles turnovers in a Virginia Independent Conference victory on Roanoke Valley Christian's court.

The Eagles were as close as 10 points with a little more than three minutes left, but could draw no closer. RVC (9-9, 4-6) was led by Mark Arbogast's 17 points. Joel Nester added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Carlisle (13-2, 8-1), which saw its string of 100-point games snapped at three, got 25 points from Ryan Smith and 20 from Joseph McClinton.

MAX MEADOWS - Nathan Blessing scored 13 of his game-high 32 points in the first quarter as the Eagles opened a 14-point lead and never looked back en route to the Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers.

Rocky Gap (10-5, 4-1), which remained tied with Grayson County for first place in the district, also got 15 points from Eric Faulkner and 12 from Kelly Dehart.

Fort Chiswell (9-7, 4-2) was led by Jody Burnett, who scored 22 points. T.J. King added 10 for the Pioneers.

BUCHANAN - Jason Perry scored 10 of his 15 points in the first quarter to give the Knights a big lead as they beat the Rams in the Pioneer District.

Highland (6-9, 1-7) cut its deficit to seven points in the third quarter, but James River's Shahan Burrell scored 10 of his 15 points in the period to help the Knights (8-8, 5-4) pull away.

Curtis Nolan added 13 for James River.

T.J. Honaker led the Rams with 19 points.

MARTINSVILLE - The Raiders overcame the loss of leading-scorer Emily Cook to fouls in the fourth quarter and held on for a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Chiefs.

Cook led North Cross (2-14, 2-8) with nine points and Emily Kennedy added eight.

Brook Holyfield scored a game-high 16 points for Carlisle (0-14, 0-6).
