TURK HEDGING ON RUN FOR STATE SENATE

A month ago, Jimmy Turk sounded like a certain contender for the Republican nomination to challenge state Sen. Madison Marye in November.

These days, things aren't so definite.

"I'll probably be announcing something" around the middle of next week, Turk said Wednesday.

Does that mean he's in or out?

"Right now I've got a lot of things to consider," Turk said. They include an 8-week-old daughter, Lindsey Leigh, his wife, Allison, and a "very busy" law practice.

In other words, he's not saying.

Turk's legal work delayed a Jan. 17 political announcement. On Jan. 9, the "Committee to Elect Jimmy Turk" advertised the Radford lawyer would make an announcement "on his intentions to seek the Republican nomination to challenge" the Shawsville Democrat.

That week former Radford City Council member Gary Weddle became the first to announce he would seek the GOP nod to challenge Marye.

But Turk had to put politics aside for nearly three weeks, as he and his brother, Bobby, defended a Bluefield, W.Va., man on trial for capital murder. A Giles County jury acquitted Fred Buchanan, who could have faced the death penalty.

On Wednesday, Turk wouldn't be any more committal about his short-term political future than "I've been considering a lot of things," or that he's been "weighing several options."

A third possible contender, Montgomery County Republican Committee Chairman Pat Cupp, said Wednesday he won't make an announcement until after the General Assembly adjourns at month's end.

On Monday, Cupp and other local party officials from across the 39th Senate District decided the Republican nomination will be determined in a May 20 mass meeting in Pulaski County.

Meanwhile, Marye, a senator since 1973, is waiting until after adjournment to say if he will run again. But he has given every indication in recent statements of being up for the fight.

The 39th District includes Montgomery, Grayson, Smyth and parts of Pulaski and Carroll counties.
