SNOW-COVERED CAR CONTAINED COUPLE'S BODIES

A man who spotted a snow-covered car in a creek found the bodies of an elderly couple who apparently died when their vehicle plunged down a steep bank off U.S. 340 two weeks ago, police said Wednesday.

They were Arthur G. Steiner, 82, and his wife, Nancy, 71, of Remington, said Sgt. J.G. Smith of the Virginia State Police.

``Apparently they had a time share up at Massanutten, and they had been staying there a couple of days,'' Smith said. The Massanutten mountain resort is in northern Rockingham County, about 25 miles north of Grottoes.

James Spencer of Elkton first saw the car Monday afternoon. He had run out of gas and was walking along U.S. 340 to get help. The car was upside down and covered by snow.

The couple's son, Arthur G. Steiner of Warrenton, said his parents checked out of their time share at 11 a.m. on Jan. 29. He said the family was concerned because they hadn't heard from them, and had reported them missing to the Fauquier County Sheriff's Department.

The bodies were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, then sent to the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke for autopsies, a hospital nursing coordinator said.
