WIN OVER PH A BIG ONE FOR EAGLES

ROCKY MOUNT - Trailing by nine points early in the first quarter Tuesday night, Franklin County found itself in danger of being blown out by Patrick Henry and falling into a last-place tie with the Patriots in the Roanoke Valley District boys' standings.

But the Eagles responded with a 15-0 run to take the lead, and Chad Foutz made the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with 13 seconds left as Franklin County kept PH winless in the district with a 54-53 victory.

After Foutz missed the second free-throw attempt, the Patriots rebounded the ball and worked it to Chris Combs, who was fouled with 3.1 seconds left. But Combs missed the front end of his one-and-one, and the Eagles' Carlos Holland picked up the loose ball to secure the victory.

Foutz and K.C. Hancock each scored 15 points to pace Franklin County (10-7 overall, 2-3 district).

``This was a big win,'' said Calvin Preston, the Eagles' coach. ``If we lose, we're in last place tied with PH; if we win, it gives us a little bit of breathing room.''

That breathing room didn't come easily.

The Patriots (6-11, 0-6) made nine 3-pointers and used four to build their early lead.

But Preston inserted point guard John Sawyers into the game for the Eagles, and Sawyers responded with a 3-pointer, two steals and two assists during Franklin County's 15-0 run.

``I was very pleased with John Sawyers' play,'' Preston said. ``He's played a lot in the past three ballgames. He did the job. He came in and ran the point and took the pressure off Chad so we could play him at two-guard. John Sawyers made a big difference in tonight's win.

``I saw PH play Pulaski, and they jumped out on them early. The reason was they were knocking down the 3-pointers and shooting well. John picked up the defense tonight and made things happen.''

Brooks Berry led Patrick Henry with 19 points, and Rashad Myers added 16.

``I give a lot of credit to Woody Deans and Patrick Henry,'' Preston said. ``Those kids haven't had a lot of success this year in terms of winning and losing, but they came in here and played hard. They came in to upset us and almost did.''

``We didn't play well, but the reason we didn't play well was because PH played extremely well.''

Galax 66

Giles 61

GALAX - Jeff Ross hit five of six field-goal attempts and scored a career-high 21 points as the Maroon Tide defeated the Spartans in a non-district matchup.

Ross scored nine in the second quarter as Galax (7-9) took a 36-31 lead. The teams played evenly through much of the second half, but Tito Crockett made two clutch shots and Ross sank three of four field-goal attempts in the last quarter to help the Maroon Tide pull away.

Crockett scored 12 points for Galax and Justin Lineberry added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Josh Stephens scored 16 points for Giles (8-9), Aaron Myers had 15 and Anthony Myers added 13.
