BASSETT CAN'T STOP WM. BYRD

BASSETT - Michael McGuire scored 20 points and Chris Childress added 18 as William Byrd rolled past Bassett 72-55 for a non-district victory Wednesday night in boys' action.

McGuire scored 11 points in the second quarter as the Terriers (15-3) outscored the Bengals 21-9 to take a 39-26 lead. Bassett cut its deficit to seven during the fourth quarter, but Byrd sank 15 of 17 free throws in the period to pull away.

Jeremy Obenchain scored 14 points for the Terriers and Kevin Tuck had 11.

Chris Hairston had 12 points for the Bengals (11-7), Tyree Hairston scored 11 and Corie Manns added 10.

Massanutten Military 71

Covington Boys' Home 42

COVINGTON - Chris Boykin and Eric Green scored 23 points each to lead Massanutten past the Indians in a non-district game.

Green scored 13 of his 23 in the fourth quarter as Massanutten (9-7) pulled away after Covington Boys' Home had closed to seven.

Massanutten outscored the Indians 25-8 in the final quarter.

Covington Boys' Home (5-13) was led by Troy Coleman, who scored 14 points. The Indians played without three starters, including Sean Riddick, who was serving a one-game suspension, and Kenny Prescott, who was sidelined with an injured foot.

Galax 66

Giles 61

GALAX - Jeff Ross hit five of six field-goal attempts and scored a career-high 21 points as the Maroon Tide defeated the Spartans in a non-district matchup.

Ross scored nine in the second quarter as Galax (7-9) took a 36-31 lead. The teams played evenly through much of the second half, but Tito Crockett made two clutch shots and Ross sank three of four field-goal attempts in the last quarter to help the Maroon Tide pull away.

Crockett scored 12 points for Galax and Justin Lineberry added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Josh Stephens scored 16 points for Giles (8-9), Aaron Myers had 15 and Anthony Myers added 13.

Tuesday's games

Laurel Park 78, Chatham 64: In Chatham, Darrell Wilson scored 23 points as the Lancers (11-5, 11-3) ran to a Piedmont District victory over the Cavaliers.

Chatham got 25 points from Scott Whitt.

Mount Carmel Christian 96, Covington Boys' Home 70: In Luray, Chris Stoneberger and Kevin Good each scored 21 points as Mount Carmel Christian (14-3) rolled to a non-district victory over the Indians.

Covington Boys' Home (5-12) got a game-high 26 points from Miles Thornton.
