STUDENT RAISING FUNDS FOR AUSTRALIAN TRIP

Kristin Cawley, a 14-year-old student at William Byrd Middle School, has been asked to be a Virginia ambassador on a trip to Australia and New Zealand this summer through the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

However, Cawley, daughter of Vivian and Robert Cawley of Hardy, must raise $4,500 to fund her way.

As an ambassador, Cawley will report to businesses and schools to give presentations on Virginia life. Her report will consist of photographs and an essay about her family, school, neighbors and businesses in the area.

She will gather the same type of information on her trip for a report back to her school and community. Shw eill visit Sydney, Canberra and Auckland as well as scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef, attending the opera in Sydney and speaking at the Australian Parliament.

Cawley is asking for sponsorship for her trip from businesses in the state, which she will include in her presentations in Australia and New Zealand. She also plans a car wash and yard sale to raise money and is collecting aluminum cans as well as looking for odd jobs.

To offer a donation, contact Kristin Cawley at 890-5519; or write to 571 Shortbridge Lane, Hardy 24101.
