KNIFE INCIDENT LEADS TO VINTON MAN'S ARREST

After a tense standoff involving a man armed with a knife, a state trooper and Bedford County sheriff's deputies, a Vinton man was arrested early Wednesday at his parents' house in Stewartsville.

Kevin Meador, 23, was charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault in the attack on Trooper T.C. Chattin and Deputies Charles Reid and Robert Monk. No one was hurt.

The standoff began shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday at a house off Virginia 886 in Stewartsville after a man threatened suicide and police were called. The man pulled a knife on the deputies, who called for assistance. The state police tactical team was called, but the man was subdued and arrested before the team arrived.

Meador is accused of assaulting the three law-enforcement officers during a scuffle to apprehend him.
