Rep. L.F. Payne, D-Nelson County, and a Rocky Mount textile operator urged a congressional committee Friday not to extend trade concessions to Caribbean nations.
Payne warned that lowering the tariffs for Caribbean imports "would only succeed in throwing thousands of American apparel workers out of their jobs."
Payne made his remarks at a House Ways and Means trade subcommittee hearing on proposed legislation that would grant certain Caribbean nations the same tariffs as members of the North American Free Trade Agreement for textile and apparel products, footwear, tuna and petroleum.

Bankruptcies
Four bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke. Two of them are personal bankruptcies that the court listed as businesses because they have commercial connections and could be of interest to business creditors and customers.
Earl Bronson Cornett and Beverly Jane Deshong Cornett of Elk Creek filed for liquidation with assets of $99,635 and liabilities of $315,074. They do business as Jeb Co., a log-hauling operation.
Gary Orren Sawyers and Mary Jo Sawyers of Bluefield asked for liquidation, listing assets of $67,300 and liabilities of $63,217. Mary Jo Sawyers operates A-1 Cleaning, a home-cleaning business.
Barry Gray Reagan and Dana Edmonds Reagan of Roanoke sought liquidation with unknown assets and liabilities of $59,236. Dana Reagan owns Danbar Enterprises, a retail gift and card shop.
Albert S. Moore Jr. and Kimberly S. Moore of Roanoke filed for a wage earner plan for repayment of debts, listing assets of $18,640 and liabilities of $23,829. Albert Moore owns Al's Custom Paint, a painting contractor.
