HOKIES RALLY PAST SOUTHERN MISS

The Virginia Tech women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to edge Southern Mississippi 64-63 in a Metro Conference game in Blacksburg Friday night.

The Hokies (16-6 overall, 6-2 Metro) trailed 59-45 with 5 minutes, 43 seconds left before former Pulaski County standout Teri Garland hit a layup to start Virginia Tech on a 19-4 run.

Tech forward Angela Donnell sank four free throws in the last 22 seconds to give Tech the win.

Jenny Root led the Hokies with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Donnell scored 12 and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Christi Osborne and Lisa Leftwich each scored 11.

Patricia Nash and Laveta Willis each had 13 for Southern Miss (13-7, 5-4).
