Bush accepted the college's invitation last summer. Sam Sadler, vice president for student affairs, said college officials held off disclosing his visit until Friday because they wanted to announce the full commencement program at one time.
Most students learned of Bush's visit through the student newspaper Friday night. Kevin Turner, president of the senior class, has known all along, and keeping it to himself hasn't always been easy.
``I've been keeping this a secret since mid-July,'' said Turner, who said students have been suggesting commencement speakers to him for months, not knowing that Bush already had been chosen.
Bush will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree at the May 14 ceremony in William and Mary Hall. David Beers Quinn, a history scholar and former W&M visiting professor, and J. Maxwell Irvine, principal and vice chancellor of the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, also will receive honorary degrees.
