EAGLES WIN STATE DUALS MATCH

A week after winning its first Group AAA Northwestern Regionals duals meet wrestling title, Franklin County won its first state tournament match.

Landon Cuff decisioned Jeff Bailisle of Cox High School 8-5 to clinch a 32-25 victory for the Eagles in the Virginia Dual State Tournament at Centreville High School. That puts Franklin County in today's semifinal match against Douglas Freeman of Richmond at 2 p.m. Douglas Freeman beat Robinson 33-23.

In the other first-round matches, Centreville stopped Hermitage 44-12 while defending champion Great Bridge beat Stonewall Jackson 47-15. The winner of the Franklin County-Douglas Freeman match meets the Centreville-Great Bridge winner in the championship contest at 4 p.m.

Franklin County is now 22-1 in dual meets and Cox finishes 16-4.

Cuff's victory in the 189-pound match boosted the Eagles' lead from 10 points to 13, placing the meet out of reach for the Falcons.

In the 152-pound class, John Muse pinned William Lewis in 1 minute, 40 seconds. It was the first of two consecutive pins for the Eagles, who won their first dual state meet in school history. Muse has only two losses on his season record, one of which came last week in the regional meet.

The second pin came when Shaun Ferguson defeated Doug Dolenti in 2:42. Franklin County coach Kris Kahila described Ferguson's win as key.

"This was a total team effort," said Kahila. "It took our whole team to win. We look forward to our match tomorrow [against Douglas Freeman], but we don't look past it. We're going to take the remaining matches one at a time. Our goal is still to win the state."
