MARTINSVILLE A STEP CLOSER TO PIEDMONT DISTRICT TITLE

Michael Martin scored 20 of his game-high 29 points in the second half as Martinsville clinched at least a tie for the Piedmont District title with a 69-52 victory over Magna Vista in boys' action Friday night.

With a victory Tuesday night over Dan River, the Bulldogs can clinch the regular-season title outright.

Martin had nine points at halftime, but scored only two in the second quarter as Martinsville (15-5 overall, 15-2 district) took a three-point lead.

Magna Vista (7-12, 7-10) was led by Tony Hagwood, who scored 14 of his team-high 25 points in the second half. Jermaine Simmons added 10 for the Warriors, who saw one of their leading scorers, Leroy Valentine, held to five points after spending most of the game on the bench in foul trouble.

Laurel Park 65

Bassett 62

MARTINSVILLE - Corey Wilson made a shot from near halfcourt at the buzzer to lift the Lancers over the Bengals in overtime in the Piedmont District.

With overtime running out and the score tied at 62, Wilson stole the ball from Bassett's Chris Hairston - who had made a pair of 3-pointers in the extra period - dribbled across the midcourt line and let fly with a 40-footer that went in at the final horn.

Laurel Park (13-5, 13-3), which kept alive its regular-season championship hopes alive, rallied in dramatic fashion in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.

With the Lancers down by five, Laurel Park's Warrick Scott made a 3-pointer then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and made a layup to knot the score at 57.

Scott led the Lancers with 15 points. Wilson scored 14 and made four 3-pointers, Rashad Wall collected 12 points and 13 rebounds and Darrell Wilson scored 10 points.

Chris Hairston led Bassett (11-8, 11-6) with 22 points and Tyree Hairston had 18.

Grayson County 93

MAX MEADOWS - Three Blue Devils scored at least 20 points as Grayson County rolled past the Pioneers to take command of the Mountain Empire District race.

Chad Shaffner led Grayson County (14-3, 6-1) with a game-high 24 points, including 16 in the first half, when the Blue Devils took a 26-point lead. Wes Self had 12 of his 21 points in the first half.

Grayson County also got 20 points from Landon Testerman and 11 from Bryan Boyer.

Fort Chiswell (9-8, 4-3) was led by Jody Burnett, who scored 21 points.

Rocky Gap 66

Narrows 63

ROCKY GAP - Nathan Blessing and Tracy Bradshaw each scored seven points in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles earn a Mountain Empire District victory over the Green Wave.

The score was tied at the end of each of the first three quarters, but Blessing and Bradshaw put Rocky Gap (11-6, 5-2) ahead to stay in the second meeting in as many nights for the two teams. Narrows beat the Eagles 79-64 on Thursday.

Blessing finished with 24 points and Bradshaw scored 20.

Bryan Pruett scored 18 points to lead the Green Wave (10-7, 4-3). Scott Vaught had 17 and Patrick Bailey finished with 15.

Rural Retreat 66

Northwood 63

RURAL RETREAT - Bradley Goodin came off bench in the second half to spark the Indians, and they rallied for a victory over the Panthers in the Hogoheegee District.

Rural Retreat, which led by three points at the half, faced a four-point deficit at the beginning of the final period. The Indians came back, however, behind Goodin's team-high 15 points.

Chris Rakes scored 14 points for Rural Retreat (3-13, 3-9) and W.K. Smith and Ray Magallanes added 11 points each.

Ricky Reeves led Northwood with a game-high 27 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 59

Dan River 45

RINGGOLD - The Cavaliers jumped in front 25-8 in the first quarter and held on for a Piedmont District victory.

Mancino Craighead had 11 points and Brian Alley and Brad Harmon added 10 each for Fieldale-Collinsville (14-6, 13-4).

Dan River (4-16) got a game-high 15 points from Eric Ferguson. The Wildcats won the second half 25-20, but were too far behind to catch up.

George Wythe 75

Chilhowie 58

CHILHOWIE - The Maroons outscored Chilhowie by 18 points in the second and third quarters and cruised to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Warriors.

Aaron Andrews poured in a game-high 27 points for George Wythe and also grabbed eight rebounds. Jon Ervin tossed in 14 points for the Maroons (14-5, 10-3) and Jason Otey and Andre Cook added 10 points a piece. Otey also contributed five assists and six steals.

Blake Mason led the Warriors (3-13, 2-13) with 14 points.

Covington 73

COVINGTON - Robbie Huffman, denied in his last try to break the 1,000-point barrier, reached the career milestone in a major way, but the Cougars spoiled the moment by cruising to a Pioneer District victory.

Covington (11-6, 7-2) used balance to overshadow Huffman's 32 points and six 3-pointers. Erwin Twitty led four Cougars in double figures, scoring 24 points. Dusty Roman scored 15, Brian Holloway had 14 and Mike Barber added 10.

Huffman notched his 1,000th point with a 3-pointer at the 1-minute, 40-second mark of the first quarter.

Bland 64

Galax 47

GALAX - The Rockets led by seven points at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter as Bland rolled to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide.

Galax remains winless in the Mountain Empire District with the loss.

Shannon Havens and Andy Self, the Rockets' big men, victimized the Maroon Tide early on the inside, combining for 14 of Bland's first 19 points. Havens finished with 14 points and Self scored 12. David Lambert and Wesley Strock added 15 points a piece for the Rockets (8-9, 2-5).

Rick Whisenhunt led Galax (7-10, 0-7) with 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Jeff Ross added 10 points for the Maroon Tide.

Bath County 75

HOT SPRINGS - The Chargers broke open a close game with a 31-point second quarter and went on to conquer the Knights in a Pioneer District game.

David Buzzard scored nine of his 13 points in the second quarter as Bath County (12-5, 6-3) opened a 23-point lead. The Chargers, who shot a season-best 57 percent from the floor, also got 13 points from Billy Thomas and 11 from Kris Phillips.

Two of the best players for James River (8-9, 5-5) were plagued by foul trouble as Jason Peery and Shahan Burrell each picked up his third personal in the second quarter. Burrell finished with a team-high 12 points and Peery had two.

Curtis Nolan added 11 points for the Knights.

Carlisle 84

LYNCHBURG - The Chiefs made 10 3-pointers and had four scorers in double figures in a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Bulldogs.

Carlisle (17-3, 11-1) was paced by Rod Mitchell's 18 points and four 3-pointers. Joe McClinton scored 16 points, Ryan Smith had 15 and Kevin Warren added 14.

Trent Richardson and Chad Jones led Lynchburg Christian Academy (11-10, 6-7) with 21 points each.

Salem 95

Rockbridge County 46

LEXINGTON - The Spartan shot 72 percent from the floor and 12 Salem players scored as they kept the Wildcats winless.

Matt Woolwine led the Spartans (11-7, 6-2) to the Blue Ridge District victory with 17 points, including 10 in the first half as they opened a 50-25 lead. Chad Pendleton scored all 12 of his points in the first half and Ryan Reeves had 16 points for Salem.

Jason Remillard had 10 points to lead Rockbridge County (0-18, 0-8).
