Directors sought

Showtimers is seeking directors for the 1996 season. Individuals with experience directing educational, community/acovational and/or professional theater are encouraged to apply.

Showtimers, Roanoke's 44-year-old community theater, produces five to six full-length productions at the 132-seat Studio Theatre in southwest Roanoke County each year.

Choral society auditions

The Roanoke Valley Choral Society will hold auditions for all voices, particularly tenor and bass, Feb. 19, 7-9 p.m., at Roanoke College's Olin Hall, room 336.

Vocalists are needed for performances of Prokofiev's ``Alexander Nevsky'' wih the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsals, beginning Feb. 20, will continue weekly up to the performances on April 24-25.

Vocalists are required to sing ``Amazing Grace'' and some light sight-reading material. For more information, 343-6221.

Music festival auditions

The Eastern Music Festival will hold auditions for its 1995 summer season Saturday at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.

The six-week advanced program is open to ages 14 to 20 who play an orchestral instrument or piano. A three-week preparatory program is offered to string and piano students ages 12 to 15.

Approximately 200 students will be selected to work with the festival's 80-member faculty on the Guilford College campus, Greensboro, N.C. Limited financial assistance is available.

Auditions will last 15 minutes and include sight-reading and prepared works. An application must be submitted before or at the time of the audition. Call (910) 333-7450.

Film festival

The Virginia Film Society's spring season opens with The Black Maria Film & Video Festival, featuring award-winning experimental, animation and short fiction films, Feb. 19, 2 p.m., in the University of Virginia's Newcomb Hall Theatre. The cost is $5.

The Black Maria, a national touring festival of independent media, is making its first appearance in Charlottesville. Festival director John Columbus will be present.

The season continues March 30 at Vinegar Hill Theatre, Charlottesville, with ``Fahrenheit 541'' and an introduction and discussion with producer Lewis Allen.

``The Uprising of '34,'' a new documentary on the history of South Carolina's textile strike of 1934, will be shown. Filmmaker George Stoney will discuss the film. Admission is $5.

``Sneak Preview: The 1995 Virginia Festival of American Film'' includes a six-week course with director of programming Richard Herskowitz. The course meets Tuesdays (except April 18) beginning March 28, 7 p.m., in UVa's Clemons Library. The fee is $95. Call (804) 982-5313 for registration information.

``The Kluge Fellow Seminar: Robert Ebert Teaches `Raging Bull' '' meets April 17 and 20, 7-9 p.m., and April 18-19, 5:15-7:15 p.m., in UVa's Caplin Auditorium. The fee is $50.
