Former World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion Joe Lewis will conduct a seminar in self-defense and fighting techniques at American Freestyle Karate on Tuesday evening at 6. The karate school is at 431 Apperson Drive in Salem.
A Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam, Lewis has been the world heavyweight champion in both karate and kickboxing. In 1983, Karate Illustrated magazine called him the best in his sport. In addition to seminars, Lewis, 50, has made videotapes and advised and assisted law-enforcement agencies and groups.
The seminar is open to adults and children. Martial-arts experience is not required. The fee to participate in the seminar is $25; a spectator's fee is $5.

Play auditions
The Cherry Tree Players will hold open auditions for the spring production Feb. 18-19, 2-5 p.m., and Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m., at the Cherry Tree Playhouse in Boonsboro Shopping Center, Lynchburg.
There are approximately 30 non-singing role available for men and women ages 18-65. Improvisational skills are helpful. Some positions are paid.

Art show entries sought
Artists are invited to submit slides of two works for the third New River Art biennial jurored exhibition sponsored by the Blacksburg Regional Art Association.
Works will be shown May 16-June 16 at Radford University's Flossie Martin Gallery and June 26-July 22 at the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, Clifton Forge.
All media except handicrafts are eligible. Artists must be 18 or older and live within 100 miles of Blacksburg and Pulaski.

Shakespeare auditions
The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival will hold auditions for its 1995 Main Stage acting company Feb. 25 and 26, 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Festival offices, 305 N. Main St., High Point, N.C.
Rehearsals will begin in July with nightly repertory performances August-October and a tour from Oct. 9-Nov. 12.
Auditionees must perform two contrasting Shakespeare monologues totaling a maximum of five minutes in length.

Poetry contest
Poems are being accepted for Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum's new ``Awards of Poetic Excellence'' poetry contest. Cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be awarded, including a $500 grand prize.
Poets may enter one poem only, 20 lines or less in length, on any subject, in any style. The contest closes March 31.
Poems also will be considered for publication in the fall, 1995, edition of ``Poetic Voices of America.''
