TRACK TEAMS WARM UP FOR METRO MEET

Bethany Eigel of Christiansburg set a meet record in the 3,200 meters and won the 1,600 to become the only double winner from Timesland during the Group AA Invitational indoor track and field meet Saturday at VMI's Cameron Hall in Lexington.

Eigel set a meet record in the 3,200 with a time of 11 minutes, 38.9 seconds and added a winning time of 5:18.5 in the 1,600.

Elsewhere, Andra Beasley of Christiansburg triumphed in the boys' long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 111/2 inches. Lamonte Page of Northside won the boys' high jump, clearing 6-2.

Cynthia Lundstrum and May Pitts, both of Salem, tied for first in the girls' 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.8 seconds. Emily Howlett of Northside went over the bar cleanly 5 feet to win the girls' high jump.

Salem won the girls' 800 relay. No names of the team members was provided.

In the team competition, Charlottesville won the boys' and girls' team competition. Christiansburg was the boys' runner-up with 60 points. In the girls meet, Christiansburg was third with 37 points. Blacksburg and Salem tied for fourth with 35.

In other sports news in the region:

The Virginia Teck track and field team tuned up for next week's Metro Conference Indoor Championships in Blacksburg by making its presence felt in the Tech Track Classic on Saturday.

The men's relay team of Geoff Tonini, Dettrick Stith, Justin Davis and Hilliard Sumner led the Tech charge by breaking the meet record with a time of 3 minutes,17.1 seconds. Tonini also won the 500-meter run and Sumner tied for first place in the 400-meter run with Davis coming in third.

Nick LaRosa of Tech finished second in the mile and fifth in the 800. Tom Lankowicz and John Hawthorne finished first and second, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run.

Meredith Newby led the Tech women's team by winning the 20-pound weight and coming in second in the shotput. Erin Graham placed third in the 55-meter hurdles, breaking a Tech indoor record.

The Virginia Tech women's tennis team had a successful first round of action at the Davidson Doubles Saturday as the number one team of Daria Ivan and Jennifer Lambert won eight out of 12 games against the Davidson pair of Nicole Wilcox and Kimberly Nance and then won eight out of 12 games against a pair from Georgia Tech.

Julie Jackson and Katherine Chen also won eight of 12 games against pairs from Davidson and Georgia Tech as the Hokies went on to sweep Davidson, take two of four matches against James Madison, and win three of four matches against the Yellow Jackets.

Roanoke College sophomore Renae Rose set three school records at the Tech Track Classic in the 400-meter run, 200-meter run, and the triple jump to lead the Division III Maroons, who were competing against Division I schools. Rose ran the 400 in 64.1 seconds, the 200 in 27.7 seconds, and leaped 9.74 meters in the triple jump - all Roanoke records.

Freshman Amy Beck set a school record when she heaved the shot put 10.44 meters.

Lord Botetourt won five championship matches as it captured the Knights' Invitational wrestling tournament at James River High School. The Cavaliers amassed 160.5 points. Radford was a distant second at 140.5, followed by James River (131.5), Alleghany (112), Rural Retreat (75), Shawsville (72.5), Parry McCluer (63) and Fieldale-Collinsville (46).
