MASONRY FIREPLACE DELIVERS HEAT WITH HIGH EFFICIENCY

Q: When we lived in Sweden, we heated with just one large fireplace. We burned it for only 45 minutes, twice a day. How efficient are these fireplaces? Do they burn clean enough to meet U.S. requirements?

A: You are referring to true masonry (often called Finnish) fireplaces with super high heat capacity. In Scandinavia, with its high energy costs, 90 percent of the homes heat exclusively with a masonry fireplace. It provides even radiant warmth, like sitting in the sun on a cold day.
