W&L, HOLLINS MAKE WAVES

Washington and Lee won the team title and the Generals' Rebekah Prince and Hollins' Kat Horton of Hollins earned individual honors Sunday at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference/Atlantic States women's swimming championships in Lexington.

W&L won the team title by 205 points over Notre Dame (Md.) behind a five-victory performance by Prince, who was named the ODAC Swimmer of the Year. The Generals' Kiki Jacobs was named Atlantic States Coach of the Year.

Horton was named the Atlantic States Swimmer of the Year, and Lynda Calkins was named ODAC Coach of the Year as Hollins finished fifth overall. (Team scores in Scoreboard. B4)

In Charleston, S.C., some familiar names did much of the damage for Tennessee as the Volunteers pounded VMI 11-4 at the CITGO Southern Challenge baseball tournament.

Eduardo Figueroa, son of former major-league pitcher Ed Figueroa, hit a solo home run in the second inning to spark the Vols (2-0). Todd Helton, an All-America first baseman and a quarterback for the Tennessee football team, led an 11-hit attack with four singles.

Ryan Glynn had two hits and knocked in two runs for the Keydets (0-2).

Washington and Lee's Robert Hull finished second in the heavyweight division at the Virginia Division II-III Wrestling Championships in Lexington. Hull, a Lexington native and Division III football All-American, dropped a 6-3 decision to David Barlow of team champion Newport News Apprentice in the final. (Team scores in Scoreboard. B4)

Newport News Apprentice won the team title with 97.5 points. The Builders were followed by Norfolk State (74.5 points), Longwood (73), W&L (36.5), Gallaudet (nine) and Hampden-Sydney (4.5).

The Virginia Tech women's tennis team finished third at the weekend's Davidson Wildcat Doubles Classic in Davidson, N.C. North Carolina State took the title based on number of games won. James Madison was second, followed by Tech and Louisville.
