MAN DIES AS TRAIN HITS HIS TRUCK

A 48-year-old Wythe County man was killed Sunday when his pickup truck crossed the path of an oncoming Norfolk Southern train.

Steven Kelly Cline was attempting to turn onto Virginia 674 from Virginia 675, which runs parallel to the railroad tracks in Rural Retreat, when the collision occurred.

Trooper F.R. Ferrell said the rear part of the truck's bed was hit, knocking it into a flashing signal light and then into a culvert. Cline, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown into the passenger-side windshield and killed.

The train was traveling at 43 mph, Ferrell said.
