UVA'S WELSH PLAYING THE INTERVIEW GAME

Joe Krivak, head football coach at Maryland from 1987-91, said he has interviewed for one of the two vacancies on the staff of Virginia coach George Welsh.

Welsh reportedly also has an interest in Duke assistant Rod Broadway, who Monday declined to say whether he had been interviewed.

``I'll answer all your questions [Tuesday],'' said Broadway, leading to speculation that he will be the Cavaliers' new defensive-line coach.

Krivak previously worked for Welsh at Navy from 1977-81, after which Krivak went to Maryland as quarterback coach.

In the decade he spent at Maryland as a head coach and assistant, Krivak, 60, worked with future National Football League quarterbacks Boomer Esiason, Stan Gelbaugh, Frank Reich, Neil O'Donnell and Scott Zolak.

Insiders say offensive coordinator Tom O'Brien, who has coached the UVa quarterbacks since 1991, may take take over the offensive-line slot vacated by Jim Bollman. That would create an opening for a quarterback coach, with O'Brien retaining his coordinator duties.

``Within the next couple of weeks, we should know something one way or another,'' Krivak said Monday from his home in Bowie, Md. ``Maybe I'll have a decision to make.''

In the four years since Maryland elected not to renew his contract, Krivak has started a consulting business, JJJ Enterprises, that specializes in football. He also has given numerous football clinics abroad and in this country.

``I haven't been out beating the bushes for a coaching job,'' Krivak said. ``I've talked to some people I'm comfortable with, some of them in the pro game, but it just hasn't worked out. In some cases, there have been factors beyond everybody's control.''

UVa has had seven full-time assistant coaches - two under the NCAA limit - since Bollman and defensive-line coach Larry New resigned in December to renew old connections at Michigan State and Georgia Tech.

Broadway, a former North Carolina defensive lineman, has worked for four different coaches in 15 years at Duke. First-year Blue Devils' coach Fred Goldsmith recently decided to go outside the staff to replace defensive coordinator Craig Bohl.
