TRASH WORKERS FIND DEAD INFANT

The body of a newborn baby still attached to the umbilical cord was found Monday in a trash-to-fuel conversion plant, and police said the case was being treated as a homicide.

The body of the infant girl was spotted on a conveyor line about 10:30 a.m. by workers at the Southeastern Public Service Authority facility, said a police spokesman.

Police said a preliminary autopsy determined that the infant had been born alive, although the cause and time of death had not been determined. Police were seeking information to identify the girl and her mother and were trying to determine where the baby was picked up.
