Playing in their final regular-season game, the Maroons turned back several Guilford attacks and beat the Quakers 77-62 for their fourth straight win in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
It was the last game for seniors Mark Genthner, Bryant Lee and Joe Schrantz at the Bast Center where the Maroons are 12-1 this season.
With the victory, Roanoke (17-7 overall, 8-10 ODAC) clinched at least a tie for second place in the conference. The Maroons will be seeded second or third for the ODAC tournament Feb.18-20 at the Salem Civic Center pending the outcome of games tonight and Wednesday involving Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon. Hampden-Sydney already has won the conference and clinched the tournament's top seed.
It was a familiar scenario Monday for the Maroons, who had a hard time pulling away from the Quakers (11-13, 8-10).
Sophomore center Tim Braun scored 10 points as the Maroons opened a 23-15 lead. But the Quakers went on a 12-5 run to close to 28-27 with 53 seconds left in the half.
The Maroons, who shot 36 percent, took a 32-29 lead into halftime. Guilford was 10-of-28 in the first half and committed 11 turnovers.
Roanoke built its lead back to 11 points midway through the second half, but Guilford cut it seven with 5 minutes, 32 seconds to play.
Genthner then sparked a Roanoke surge with a steal, a layup and a 3-pointer within two minutes that pushed the lead to 68-56 with 3:33 left.
``With about five minutes left I tried to attack on defense,'' said Genthner, who finished with nine points, three assists and three steals. ``When we attack things start to happen defensively and that leads to an offensive spark.''
Once again, sophomore guard Jason Bishop led the Maroons. Coming off a career-high 27 points against Washington and Lee on Saturday, Bishop had 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals against the Quakers.
As a team, however, Roanoke did not shoot well, finishing the game 26-of-43 (41 percent). Guilford was 23-of-64 (36 percent).
``Both teams missed shots that they normally make,'' said Roanoke coach Page Moir. ``It got to the point were both teams were really fighting themselves.''
Braun finished with 15 points and eight rebounds and Kevin Sigafoes had 10 points for Roanoke. Lee, the league's leading rebounder, added a team-high 16 boards. He also had nine points.
Center Robby Pack led Guilford with 17 points.
