VMI'S PRINCE HITS BOOKS AND SHOTS

VMI guard Bobby Prince was named Tuesday to the GTE University Division Academic All-District III men's basketball team.

Prince, a junior from Lord Botetourt High School, has a 3.9 grade-point average as a civil engineering major. He is now eligible for the national Academic All-America team, which will be announced March 7.

Prince averages 12.7 points and 6.6 assists for the Keydets.

Washington and Lee junior Cam Dyer was named to the Division III All-District team. Dyer, who carries a 3.4 GPA as a business administration major, leads the Generals in scoring (17.4 per game) and rebounding (7.9 per game).

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke's Billy King and Salem's Chip Sullivan finished in the money in their respective divisions of the PGA Tournament Series event in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

King finished fifth in the senior division with a two-round total of 3-under-par 141, four strokes off the pace, to earn $900 at PGA National Resort and Spa.

Sullivan tied for seventh and earned $1,237.50 with a 138 total that was five strokes behind the winner.

VMI has yet to fill the vacancy on its 1995 football schedule created in January when Vanderbilt announced it was replacing the NCAA Division I-AA Keydets with Division I-A Louisiana Tech for a Sept.9 date

Davis Babb, VMI's athletic director, said Tuesday he had not reached with Vanderbilt officials what he considered a fair settlement given the short notice. Babb learned Jan.23 that the Commodores were dropping the Keydets, sending him scrambling for an 11th game, preferably against a Division I-A opponent at home.

The Ferrum women's basketball team was ranked No.6 in the NCAA Division III South Region poll released Tuesday. Christopher Newport (15-7), a Dixie Conference rival of the Panthers (13-8), was No.5. Randolph-Macon (17-5), which lost to Roanoke College 67-61 Tuesday night in a battle for first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, was No.7. The Maroons (18-5) were not ranked.

In the men's poll, ODAC regular-season champ Hampden-Sydney (21-2) was ranked first in the regional poll and Bridgewater (16-7) was No.6. Roanoke (17-7).
