FACTS AND FUN

The third Monday in February, Presidents' Day, is when the country officially says happy birthday to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and pays general respects to all 42 of its presidents.

Add to the list of achievements by our venerable leaders inspirations for this crop of commemorative cookies from the makers of Crisco. Crisco's manufacturers suggest that baking the cookies is a perfect way to spend time and share presidential tales with children - like the story of young George Washington saying, "I cannot tell a lie" and confessing to chopping down a cherry tree in his family's Virginia yard after his father discovered the deed, or how Abraham Lincoln, as a young boy, lived in a log cabin in Kentucky. It is said that Lincoln received his nickname, Honest Abe, while working as a store clerk, when he walked many miles to return a few pennies to a customer he inadvertently short-changed.

You could tell them that among his many accomplishments, Jimmy Carter was also a successful peanut farmer, or that Ronald Reagan was our oldest president, elected at age 69. He made no secret of his love for chewy jelly beans.

Thus far, all of our presidents have been men. But many of their wives have been notable in ther own rights. James Madison's wife, Dolley Madison, first popularized ice cream, a favorite accompaniment for all kinds of cookies, when she served it at the White House.
