CAVALIERS HIRE DUKE ASSISTANT

Virginia announced Wednesday that Rod Broadway, an assistant football coach at Duke for the past 14 seasons, has agreed to coach the defensive tackles for the Cavaliers.

In other staff developments, head coach George Welsh confirmed 11-year assistant Danny Wilmer will take over as recruiting coordinator while continuing to coach the UVa offensive tackles and tight ends.

Welsh hopes to complete his staff within the next week by hiring an offensive coach. The Cavaliers and Duke are talking to Joe Krivak, formerly the head coach at Maryland.

Duke is looking for an offensive coordinator to replace Mike Heimderdinger, who resigned to join the staff of new Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

Welsh said Tom O'Brien will remain as offensive coordinator and continue to call plays, although O'Brien may return to the offensive line after coaching the UVa quarterbacks since 1991.

Broadway replaces Larry New, who resigned after the season to return to Georgia Tech for a second tour. Broadway was an All-ACC defensive tackle at North Carolina, where he was a teammate of Ken Mack, who coaches the UVa running backs.

``This is the first time in a long time I've been interested in moving,'' said Broadway who worked under four head coaches at Duke. ``I wasn't interested in moving just to move. I was looking for a stable situation.''

Wilmer's added duties resulted from NCAA legislation that prohibited a recruiting coordinator from watching film and calling recruits without counting against the Division I-A limit of nine full-time assistants.

``He [Wilmer] is the recruiting coordinator more than just nominally,'' Welsh said. ``We have to have somebody in that position.''

At a news conference called to discuss Virginia's football recruits, Welsh reported that Antonio Prosise, a former Group A player of the year, is academically ineligible to return to UVa.

Prosise, a running back from Sussex Central High School, was redshirted as a freshman in 1993 and was placed on academic probation before he ever played a down for Virginia in 1994.
