MARTINSVILLE - Seven students, including three in kindergarten, were suspended by the city School Board for violating a weapons policy that took effect last month.
Six of the students were suspended for bringing toy guns to elementary schools, and a seventh-grader was suspended for having a Cub Scout knife. That student did not threaten or injure anyone, but he got a 10-day suspension for possessing the knife, Superintendent Harold Lamm said.
Of the students with toy guns, Lamm said, three are in kindergarten, one is in first grade and one is in second grade.
The suspensions ranged from two to 10 days, Lamm said.

Wildlife license plate money lying idle
Virginia motorists have paid nearly $600,000 for colorful license plates to help finance state environmental projects, but not a crab or an oyster has benefited.
The money is sitting idle in two state-controlled funds, while environmental groups and the Allen administration debate how and when to use the money.
In response, environmental groups are rallying behind a bill that would force the state over the next two years to spend $300,000 of that money on projects benefiting the bay.
