UVA TO KICK OFF SEASON ON TELEVISION

ABC and Raycom Sports have reached agreement for a national telecast of the Virginia-Michigan game in the Pigskin Classic, one of two games to open the 1995 college football season.

The sponsoring National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) approved the arrangement Thursday, and ABC has announced a multiyear commitment to the Pigskin game, which formerly was based at Anaheim Stadium.

The UVa-Michigan game will be aired live Saturday, Aug. 26 at noon from Ann Arbor.

Raycom executive vice president Ken Haines said the Charlotte-based marketing and production firm and ABC are still working out the sales and production arrangements on the game. As the visiting team, UVa is expected to gross at least $600,000 for agreeing to play a 12th game.

The other early season game, the Kickoff Classic, does not yet have a firm matchup, although speculation has Penn State meeting North Carolina in the Aug. 27 contest in East Rutherford, N.J.

Anderson University of Anderson, Ind., will play Christendom College of Front Royal in basketball at Northside High School on Saturday at 2 p.m.

This is the first Northside alumni ``Billy's Boys Return'' event, referring to former players of Vikings coach Billy Pope who are now playing on the collegiate level.

This year, the lone returnee is Chad Briscoe, the captain and point guard of the 1991 Northside team that was beaten by Matoaca in the Group AA state semifinals. Briscoe is a starting guard and co-captain for Anderson, and is averaging 8.5 points and 3.0 assists a game. He was honorable mention for the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference as a junior.

Anderson's record is 11-15. It is the final career regular season game for Briscoe, who was a two-year starter at Northside.

Northside hopes to keep its domination going of the Blue Ridge District wrestling tournament Saturday at Salem.

The Vikings, who have finished third and second in the Group AA state meet the past two years, are favored to win the Blue Ridge but face a tough battle against William Byrd.

While Northside battles the Terriers, Franklin County is a huge favorite to dominate the Roanoke Valley District meet at Cave Spring.

Franklin County won the Group AAA Northwestern Region duals meet and last weekend finished second to Great Bridge in the Group AAA state tournament.

Grayson County crushed Fort Chiswell 72-5 in the two-team Mountain Empire District meet Wednesday. Both teams advance to next week's Region C tournament at Bath County.

The Piedmont (at Bassett) and Seminole (at Rustburg) meets are scheduled for Saturday in other Group AA tournaments involving Timesland entries.

In Group A, the Three Rivers District is set at Shawsville, the Pioneer District is at Glenvar and Castlewood will play host to the Hogoheegee District. All are scheduled for Saturday.

Blacksburg earned the New River District wrestling title by winning five individual weight classes to beat Carroll County 157-133 in the district tournament held in Hillsville.

The Indians did particularly well in the higher weight classes, beating the Cavaliers in the 171-, 189-, and 275-pound divisions. B.J. Lafon of Blacksburg pinned Chris McMillian of Carroll County in 35 seconds to take home the 171 title. Kip Kenyon won the 189 crown by pinning Jeremy Cummins and Nathan Cumbee finished the Indian dominance by pinning Carroll County's Tommy Groce in the 275-pound division.

Blacksburg's other two championship winners were Justin Whittier, who decisioned Adam Bain of Christiansburg 18-14 in the 119 class, and John Ohm, who decisioned Eric Thurlow of Christiansburg 11-4 in the 140 class.

The Virginia Tech volleyball team has signed two 6-foot-1 players - Kerri Beasley of Gate City and Kerry Majewski of Austin, Texas.

Beasley led Gate City to a 14-2 record this season and is expected to play middle blocker for the Hokies. Her father, Tom Beasley, played football at Tech from 1973-76 and won Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins.

Majewski, a rightside hitter, is expected to contribute next season as the Hokies lose all three players at that position to graduation this spring.

Ross Cload, a freshman first baseman, was 4-for-5 with three RBI as South Florida whipped Radford 9-2 in college baseball in Tampa, Fla. The Bulls (2-3) pounded Radford starting pitcher Jason Anderson for seven runs in four innings. Anderson took the loss for the Highlanders (1-1).

North Carolina and Virginia dominated the first day of competition at the Atlantic Coast Conference women's swimming and diving championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. The team scores through six events are: North Carolina 256, Virginia 231, Clemson 164, Florid State 147, Maryland 88, North Carolina State 84 and Duke 54.
