BAILEY'S 1,000TH IN VAIN FOR NARROWS

Wes Self made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds remaining as Grayson County clinched its third consecutive Mountain Empire District boys' title with a 69-68 victory over Narrows.

Bryan Boyer of Grayson County and Patrick Bailey of Narrows each went over 1,000 points for his career. Boyer became the first player in Blue Devils history to achieve that milestone, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Narrows (11-9 overall, 5-5 district) went ahead 68-67 with 1 minute, 3 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Bryan Pruett, who finished with 15 points.

Grayson County (16-4, 8-2) regained the lead on the free throws by Self, who had 15 points.

After a Narrows turnover and a missed free throw by Grayson County, the Green Wave had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Bailey's 3-point attempt hit the rim and bounced off.

Bailey finished with a game-high 26 points. Robbie Stafford and Scott Vaught contributed 12 points apiece.

Grayson County got 14 points from Chad Shaffner.

BLACKSBURG - Tony Wheeler hit a short jumper with two seconds left as the Indians survived a major scare from the Cavaliers in a New River District game.

Carroll County (4-17, 0-4) tied the score at 47 with 14 seconds left when Casey McCreary hit a shot and was fouled. McCreary, who scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, missed the free throw, but teammate Kevin Dalton grabbed the rebound and was fouled immediately. Dalton missed the front end of a one-and-one, and the Indians (8-11, 2-2) called a timeout with seven seconds left after grabbing the rebound to set up Wheeler's game-winning shot.

Wheeler finished the game with a team-high 14 points and Aaron Marshall added 10. Matt Larrowe chipped in 12 points for the Cavaliers.

Floyd County 83

Shawsville 63

FLOYD - Travis Cantrell had 16 points as the Buffaloes clinched at least a tie for the Three Rivers District title with a victory over the Shawnees.

Cantrell, a freshman guard, added six rebounds, four assists and three steals for Floyd County (15-4, 6-1). Peter Bucklin had 14 points and six rebounds, and Ben Kiser contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Shawsville (2-18, 1-7) was led by Jeremy Nichols with 27 points and Ryan Givers with 12.

Christiansburg 59

John Hairston scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Blue Demons downed the Bulldogs in a non-district matchup.

Christiansburg sank 10 3-point attempts and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Tazewell managed only two 3s and missed seven of 10 free throws.

Carlton Ashbrook had 11 points for the Demons (18-3). Ryan Hubble scored 10.

Thad Beavers scored 13 for Tazewell (4-16). Rick Snap had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Danie Wright chipped in 11 points.

Galax 60

GALAX - Jeff Ross, Ken Houtz and Tito Crockett combined for 44 of the Maroon Tide's 60 points as Galax stunned the Eagles to earn its second consecutive Mountain Empire District victory.

The Maroon Tide (9-10, 2-7), which beat Fort Chiswell during the week, was led by Ross. He scored a game-high 18 points, including 10 in the first quarter while hitting his first four field-goal attempts. Ross also had five steals to go with four assists. Houtz and Crockett added 13 points each for the Maroon Tide.

Nathan Blessing led Rocky Gap with 11 points and Eric Faulkner had 10. The Eagles (12-8, 6-4) cut the Galax lead to seven in the fourth quarter when Tracy Bradshaw and Will Dodson hit 3-pointers, but Ross, Houtz and Crockett each hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Maroon Tide.

FORT CHISWELL - The Rockets' defense clamped down on the Pioneers' Jody Burnett and Bland earned a Mountain Empire District victory.

Burnett, who entered the game as the district's leading scorer (21.2 points per game), was held to five. Brad Hughes scored a team-high 11 points for Fort Chiswell (10-10, 5-5).

Shannon Havens led Bland (9-10, 3-6) with 18 points and Andy Selfe added 12.

George Wythe 65

BRISTOL - Aaron Andrews hit six of nine free throws in the fourth quarter as the Maroons edged the Trojans in a Hogoheegee District battle.

John Battle (6-15, 5-11) took a 30-26 halftime lead and stayed in front until late in the fourth quarter. George Wythe took over on the strength of Andrews' free throws as the Trojans missed the front end of three consecutive one-and-ones in the final two minutes.

Andrews scored 26 points for George Wythe (16-5, 13-3). Jon Ervin had 14, Jason Otey 11 and Skip Copenhaver 10.

Jason Brummitt and John Hall each scored 15 for John Battle.
