GLENVAR FALLS TO COVINGTON

Brian Holloway and Dusty Roman each sank two late free throws to lift Covington over Glenvar 63-58 as the Cougars clinched at least a tie for the Pioneer District crown Friday night.

In a close game, Covington (13-6 overall, 9-2 district) opened a 10-point lead, only to see Glenvar cut it to one with nine seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Jason Darnall, but Holloway and Roman each hit his free throws in the last few seconds to hold off the comeback bid.

Nick Varney led the Highlanders (11-7, 6-3) with 13 points. Darnall and Matt Atkinson each added 10 for Glenvar.

Holloway finished with a game-high 20 points. Erwin Twitty added 17 and Roman had 15 points to pace Covington.

Bath County 65

BUCHANAN - Kris Phillips scored 17 points as the Chargers defeated the Knights in the Pioneer District.

After falling behind 35-26 at halftime, James River opened the second half by outscoring Bath County 17-7. The Chargers countered by outscoring the Knights 23-13 in the fourth quarter, led by John Rogers, who scored eight of his 14 points during the run and Matt Williams, who added seven of his 11 points. Williams also pulled down 10 rebounds for Bath County.

Curtis Nolan led James River with 14 points and Jason Perry added 10.

LEXINGTON - The Cavaliers charged from the gate to a 20-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back en route to a Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Shannon Williams led Lord Botetourt (10-10, 3-7) with 23 points and Jonathan Neil pumped in 22. Ryan Salvi tossed in 14 points, 12 of those on 3-pointers.

Jamie Terrell led Rockbridge County (0-21, 0-1) with 17 points. Ricky Wright tossed in 13 points and Jason Remillard added 10.

Liberty 94

APPOMATTOX - Raymond Arrington had 15 points to pace four Liberty scorers in double figures as the Minutemen crushed the Raiders in a Seminole District game.

Arrington scored 10 of his points in the third quarter after Liberty (18-2, 18-2) had cruised to a 24-point lead.

Gregg Reynolds scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half and Stephen Shrader had 11 of his 13 in the first half as the Minutemen dominated.

Appomattox (8-12, 8-12) was led by Ben Brown, who scored a game-high 16 points.

Brookville 66

LYNCHBURG - Senior center Patrick Muncher had 16 points and 23 rebounds to help the Bees break a three-way tie for third place in the Seminole District with a victory over the Golden Eagles.

Coupled with William Campbell's victory over Altavista, Brookville (15-5, 15-5) earned the No.3 seed for the conference tournament.

Jamie Mallow added 20 points for the Bees.

Cornelius Foxx had 21 points and Hunter Hoggatt added 20 to pace Staunton River (14-6).

The Hilltoppers outscored the Patriots 16-5 in the fourth quarter to win a non-district matchup.

PH (6-14) led 31-30 with 3 minutes, 30 seconds remaining, but E.C. Glass went on a 17-4 run to close the game and earn the victory.

Jamar Harden scored a game-high 14 points for the Hilltoppers. Chris Combs led the Patriots with 11 points.

CHATHAM - Patrick Roberts scored eight of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Tigers downed the Eagles to grab the last spot in the Virginia Independent Conference tournament.

Hargrave took a 44-33 halftime lead and increased its advantage to 17 before Mark Arbogast scored eight in the third period to help Roanoke Valley Christian (10-13, 5-9) cut the lead to four. But the Eagles couldn't hold on as the Tigers pulled away down the stretch.

James Searcy scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Hargrave. P.J. Short added 17 and Rohn Lee had 16.

Joel Nester had 22 points and seven rebounds for Roanoke Valley Christian. Arbogast had 20 and Simon Foster 17. Richard Booth had 12 points and 13 assists.
