GRAYSON WRAPS UP TITLE

Wes Self made a pair of free throws with 29 seconds remaining as Grayson County clinched its third consecutive Mountain Empire District boys' title with a 69-68 victory over Narrows.

Bryan Boyer of Grayson County and Patrick Bailey of Narrows each went over 1,000 points for his career. Boyer became the first player in Blue Devils history to achieve that milestone, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Narrows (11-9 overall, 5-5 district) went ahead 68-67 with 1 minute, 3 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Bryan Pruett, who finished with 15 points.

Grayson County (16-4, 8-2) regained the lead on the free throws by Self, who had 15 points.

After a Narrows turnover and a missed free throw by Grayson County, the Green Wave had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Bailey's 3-point attempt hit the rim and bounced off.

Bailey finished with a game-high 26 points. Robbie Stafford and Scott Vaught contributed 12 points apiece.

Grayson County got 14 points from Chad Shaffner.

Covington 63

COVINGTON - The Cougars defeated the Highlanders to clinch at least a tie for the Pioneer District crown.

In a close game, Covington opened a 10-point lead, only to see Glenvar cut it to one with nine seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Jason Darnell. But the Cougars' Brian Holloway and Dusty Roman each hit a pair of free throws to hold off the comeback.

Nick Varney led the Highlanders (11-7, 6-3) with 13 points, and Darnell and Matt Atkinson each added 10.

Holloway scored 20 points, Erwin Twitty 17 and Roman 15 points to pace Covington (13-6, 9-2).

Bath County 65

BUCHANAN - Kris Phillips scored 17 points as the Chargers defeated the Knights in the Pioneer District.

After falling behind 35-26 at halftime, James River opened the second half by outscoring Bath County 17-7. The Chargers countered by outscoring the Knights 23-13 in the fourth quarter, lead by John Rogers, who scored eight of his 14 points during the run and Matt Williams, who added seven of his 11 points. Williams also pulled down 10 rebounds for Bath County.

Curtis Nolan led James River with 14 points and Jason Perry added 10.

Laurel Park 75

Patrick County 66

MARTINSVILLE - The Lancers outscored the Cougars by nine points in the decisive third quarter and rolled to a victory in the final regular-season Piedmont District game for both teams.

Darrell Wilson proved to be the unstoppable force for Laurel Park (15-5, 13-5), scoring 21 points in the first half. Wilson finished the game with 31. Girard Foster pumped in 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Rashard Wall added 12 points for the Lancers.

Wes Jones led Patrick County, scoring a team-high 19 points. Jason Wood tossed in 15, including 10 in the first quarter, and Chris Batcheller added 10. The Cougars finished 4-14 in the Piedmont District.

Patrick County will open the district tournament Monday night at Tunstall. Laurel Park will be home against the winner of that game Tuesday night in the second round of the tournament.

LEXINGTON - The Cavaliers charged from the gate to a 20-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back en route to a Blue Ridge District victory over the Wildcats.

Shannon Williams led Lord Botetourt (10-10, 3-7) with 23 points and Jonathan Neil pumped in 22. Ryan Salvi tossed in 14 points, 12 of those on 3-pointers.

Jamie Terrell led Rockbridge County (0-21, 0-1) with 17 points. Ricky Wright tossed in 13 points and Jason Remillard added 10.

Galax 60

Rocky Gap 50

GALAX - Jeff Ross, Ken Houtz and Tito Crockett combined for 44 of the Maroon Tide's 60 points as Galax stunned the Eagles to earn its second consecutive Mountain Empire District victory.

The Maroon Tide (9-10, 2-7), which beat Fort Chiswell during the week, was led by Ross. He scored a game-high 18 points, including 10 in the first quarter while hitting his first four field-goal attempts. Ross also had five steals to go with four assists. Houtz and Crockett added 13 points each for the Maroon Tide.

Nathan Blessing led Rocky Gap with 11 points and Eric Faulkner had 10. The Eagles (12-8, 6-4) cut the Galax lead to seven in the fourth quarter when Tracy Bradshaw and Will Dodson hit 3-pointers, but Ross, Houtz and Crockett each hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Maroon Tide.

FORT CHISWELL - The Rockets' defense clamped down on the Pioneers' Jody Burnett and Bland earned a Mountain Empire District victory.

Burnett, who entered the game as the district's leading scorer (21.2 points per game), was held to five. Brad Hughes scored a team-high 11 points for Fort Chiswell (10-10, 5-5).

Shannon Havens led Bland (9-10, 3-6) with 18 points and Andy Selfe added 12.

BRISTOL - Aaron Andrews hit six of nine free throws in the fourth quarter as the Maroons edged the Trojans in a Hogoheegee District battle.

John Battle (6-15, 5-11) took a 30-26 halftime lead and stayed in front until late in the fourth quarter. George Wythe took over on the strength of Andrews' free throws as the Trojans missed the front end of three consecutive one-and-ones in the final two minutes.

Andrews scored 26 points for George Wythe (16-5, 13-3). Jon Ervin had 14, Jason Otey 11 and Skip Copenhaver 10.

Jason Brummitt and John Hall each scored 15 for John Battle.

Castlewood 52

RURAL RETREAT - The Blue Devils made 19 of 25 free throws to slip past the Indians in a Hogoheegee District game.

Castlewood was led by Daniel Jesse, who scored 10 points. Brian Salyer added nine points.

Rural Retreat (4-16, 4-12), which was plagued by 10-of-22 free-throw shooting, was led by Chris Rakes, who scored 13 points. W.K. Smith added 12.

Thursday's games

Tygarts Valley, W.Va. 69, Highland 63: Chad McCauley scored a game-high 19 points, including seven in the third quarter, as the hosts held off the Rams in a non-district game.

Tygarts Valley outscored Highland 16-7 in the third quarter as Highland Rams made only one field-goal attempt. McCauley led four Tygarts Valley scorers in double figures. Derrick Armstrong and Doug Hamrick added 12 each. Jeff Ball had 11.

Jacob Hull led Highland (6-14) with 17 points. Bryan Werner and Ryan Harris added 13 each.

Carlisle 108, Martinsville Christian 44: In Martinsville, Ryan Smith had 26 points to lead six Chiefs scorers in double figures as Carlisle pounded Martinsville Christian in a non-district boys' game.

Smith, who hit four 3-pointers, also had 12 assists and eight rebounds for Carlisle (18-2), which led 52-21 at halftime. Also for the Chiefs, Bryant Redd had 16 points, followed by Ronticus Hairston with 14, Rod Mitchell and Joseph McClinton with 12 each and Jay Dee Draper with 10.

James Philpott paced the Gladiators with 13 points.
