MOBILE-HOME MAKER MAY GROW

Fleetwood Homes of Virginia Inc., unit of a Riverside, Calif.-based producer of mobile homes and recreational vehicles, is expected to unveil plans Monday for a major expansion of its Rocky Mount operations. The Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership on Friday said the announcement will come at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Comfort Inn in Rocky Mount.

Gary Clark, general manager of Fleetwood's Rocky Mount operations, will have an announcement Monday, said Carolyn Stone, an employee in Fleetwood's accounting department. Clark was not available to comment Friday. The company is expected to say it will build a new manufacturing facility in the industrial park owned jointly by Franklin County and Rocky Mount off U.S. 220-Business.

Fleetwood's 255 employees build single-wide mobile homes. The plant completed 3,300 14-foot units in 1993 and last year began making 16-foot units after highway officials approved hauling the wider units on state roads.

Fleetwood would be the second Rocky Mount housing manufacturer to expand in recent months. Mod-U-Kraf Homes received permission in October to build a second Rocky Mount plant.
