NAMES & CHANGES

Jewelry store appoints executives

MARK M. BAIR has been appointed vice president of operations and WALTER C. GAYNOR has been named vice president of finance and administration at Fink's Jewelers, a retail chain based in Roanoke.

Bair began his career at Bailey, Banks and Biddle in Pittsburgh. He was transferred to Charlotte, N.C., in 1987 and joined Fink's subsidiary, Garibaldi and Bruns, in 1990.

Gaynor became a certified public accountant in 1977 and was employed by McGladrey, Hedrickson and Pullen CPAs in Winston-Salem, N.C. He later joined Doyle Lumber Inc. of Martinsville as vice president of finance. In 1986, he joined Holdren's Inc. of Roanoke as vice president and chief financial officer.

Fink's operates seven stores in Virginia and three subsidiary stores in North Carolina.

ADVERTISING

BRUCE THOMASSON has been named business manager for Group One, a sales promotion division of The Packett Group in Roanoke. Thomasson will continue as account supervisor at Packett. He is a past president of the Advertising Federation of Roanoke Valley.

CONSULTING

BRANDON BELL has been appointed vice president of New Options Group Inc., a regional outplacement and career development counseling company based in Fairfax. He will be responsible for sales, marketing and counseling in the regional office in Roanoke. Bell, a state senator, previously worked in computer sales.

INSURANCE

DONALD M. PADGETT has been appointed assistant vice president-information systems for the Atlantic Mutual Cos. Padgett began working at the insurance company in 1984 as a data analyst in the national processing center in Roanoke. That same year, he was promoted to manager of the telecommunications department.

NONPROFITS

Good Samaritan Hospice Inc. has elected its board of directors for 1995: GEORGE BOWERS, The Park Oak Grove; JO FINTEL, community volunteer; BROADDUS FITZPATRICK, Coleman & Massey; VIC FOTI, Foti, Flynn, Lowen & Co.; DAVID MIDDAG, Medical & Cardiology, Lynchburg; MONTY PLYMALE, Central Fidelity Bank; MELODY SHOCKLEY, Western Sizzlin Corp.; JANET WHITAKER, community volunteer; and SUZANNE R. MOORE, who has been promoted from vice president to president of the hospice.

TED SIMPKINS of Roanoke has been appointed executive director of the Central Piedmont Employment Consortium in Rocky Mount. He has been acting director since August and has been deputy director since 1989. Before that, he was a case manager with the Southern Area Agency on Aging.

ORGANIZATIONS

ANNE MARIE GREEN, community relations director for Roanoke County, has been elected president of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Other officers are JEFF DOUGLAS, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, president-elect; KEN SRPAN, Friendship Manor, secretary; MICHELLE BONO, city of Roanoke, treasurer; and DON JOHNSON, Appalachian Power Co., assembly delegate. New board members are BRIAN GOTTSTEIN, United Way of Roanoke Valley; BRIAN SHAW, Washington & Lee University; ELIZABETH PARKINS, Advance Auto; and CASEY DOSS, Carilion Health System.

RETAIL

ROBERT F. THATCHER has been chosen senior vice president of Home Shopping Network Inc.'s fulfillment operation. In his new position, he will oversee fulfillment centers in Salem; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Reno, Nev.; and Waterloo, Iowa.

JOHN BAYS has been promoted to director of perishable merchandising for The Kroger Co.'s mid-Atlantic marketing area. He comes to Roanoke from Charleston, W.Va., where he was director of operations. Also, JOYCE McINTOSH has been promoted to head produce buyer for the area. She formerly was floral procurement manager for Kroger.

TRANSPORTATION

CHARLES J. WEHRMEISTER has been promoted to the new position of assistant vice president-safety and environmental at Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Roanoke office. DAVID A. BROWN II succeeds Wehrmeister as superintendent of the Virginia Division, based in Roanoke. Wehrmeister joined Norfolk Southern's predecessor, Norfolk & Western Railway, in 1969. He was named Norfolk terminal superintendent in 1984 and Virginia Division superintendent in 1991. Brown joined the operations department of Southern Railway, a Norfolk Southern predecessor, in 1981. After being assistant superintendent at Decatur, Ill., and Bluefield, W.Va., he was named Kentucky Division superintendent in 1993.
