CRASH SURVIVOR HOSPITALIZED

A man injured in a single-car accident that killed a woman identified as his stepsister on Friday night was in satisfactory condition Saturday night in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Roanoke County Police Officer W.D. Byrd said Jessie Melvin Cook, 26, lives with his mother and the father of his stepsister, Annie Marie Lephew, just up Cove Hollow Road from where the accident occurred Friday night near the Montgomery County line.

Lephew, 25, of Roanoke, was killed when the car she was driving ran off the left side of the road, went into a creek and slammed into a stone culvert.

She and Cook had just left their parents' house when the wreck occurred. Cook was pinned in the car by the dashboard and had to be cut out by rescue workers.

Cook was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he remained Saturday night. Byrd said Cook underwent surgery for a badly broken leg.
