HERD THUNDERS PAST VMI

Malik Hightower hit seven 3-pointers as Marshall tied its Southern Conference single-game record for 3-pointers Saturday in beating VMI 107-62 for its fifth straight victory.

Hightower was seven-of-10 on 3-pointers and scored 24 points to lead six double-figure scorers for the Thundering Herd (15-8 overall, 7-4 Southern).

All nine Marshall players scored as the Herd made 17 of 34 3-pointers, tying the record it shares with VMI (7-15, 4-7). The Keydets set the record in 1991-92 against Shenandoah College, and Marshall tied it earlier this season at VMI.

VMI was 4-of-22 on 3-point attempts.

Marshall never trailed and led 22-11 after the game's first 5 minutes, 57 seconds. The closest VMI came was 22-14 about a minute later, but the Herd soon used a 20-0 run to go up 46-19 and led 58-30 at halftime.

Marshall twice led by 45 points in the second half, the second time on the final score following a Tink Brown layup.

Marshall outshot the Keydets 54 percent to 30 percent and led 47-40 in rebounds.

Shawn Moore scored 18, Troy Gray 14, Chris Gray 12, Thad Bonapart 11 and Curtis Raymond 10 for the Herd. Moore, the Grays and Doug Schieppe each hit two 3-pointers.

Bryan Taueg led VMI with 14 points and was the Keydets' only double-figure scorer.

Marshall plays Monday at East Tennessee State. VMI is home Monday against Davidson.
