TECH ON TRACK FOR METRO TITLE

Virginia Tech's men's and women's track teams are leading the Metro Conference Indoor Track Championships after the first day of competition Saturday in Blacksburg.

The Tech men built an 82-76 lead over Virginia Commonwealth behind senior Dave Hannett's meet record of 3,668 points in the pentathlon events. Brett Matthews finished second in the 800-meter run, one-tenth of a second behind winner Bruce Berger of Virginia Commonwealth, who won the event in 1 minute, 51.68 seconds. Tech's Greg Henley won the long jump on the basis of his second-best leap. Both Henley and VCU's Wil Dickerson had top jumps of 7.15 meters.

On the women's side, Meredith Newby shattered the meet record in the 20-pound weight with a throw of 14.91 meters. Jennifer Chapman won the 800 run in 2:19.33, one-tenth of a second better than Louisville's Michelle Borgert. The women's team holds a 10-point lead over South Florida going into today's events.

In other sports news in the region:

The Oak Hill Warriors, the two-time defending USA Today national high school champions, will play Long Island Lutheran at Pulaski County High School at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Oak Hill is 26-2 and Long Island Lutheran, which was the No. 1 team in New York last year, is 25-3.

Admission for the game is $5 for adults, $3 for high school students, and free for children under 8. An autograph session will follow the game.

Franklin County Speedway announced that it is removing all restrictor plates, thus allowing all cars to produce more than 100 extra horsepower.

The first practice will be on March 4 from noon to 5 p.m. and the first race will be March 25 at 3 p.m. A record number of cars is expected this year.

Brookville dominated the Seminole District wrestling tournament at Brookville, winning four individual championships and carrying home the team title with 189.5 points, 53.5 points better than second-place Jefferson Forest.

The Bees won the 135-, 140-, 145-, 171-pound weight classes en route to the championships. Staunton River and Liberty finished third and fourth, respectively, with Christopher Blair of Liberty the only wrestler from either school to win an individual title when he decisioned Jason Henderson of Jefferson Forest to take home the 125-pound crown.

Five Staunton River wrestlers - Joshua Ridgeway (103), James Williams (119), Chad Huddleston (130), Danny Thomas (135), and Charles Hodge (171) - all lost their individual classes in the final round, and two Liberty wrestlers - Kevin Burnette (112) and Jason Evans (152) - lost in the final round.
