FERRUM MEN CLAIM DIXIE TITLE

The Ferrum men's basketball team won its third Dixie Conference title in four years on Saturday when North Carolina Wesleyan knocked off Greensboro 92-81. Greensboro had been one-half game behind the Panthers in the conference standings.

Ferrum (12-12 overall, 9-3 Dixie) will receive a bye in the conference tournament. The Panthers, who won regular-season titles in 1992 and '93, face the winner of a first-round game between No.4 Greensboro and No.5 Shenandoah on Friday.

In other first-round games, No.6 Methodist plays No.3 Christopher Newport and seventh-seeded Averett meets No.2 North Carolina Wesleyan. All first-round games will be played Tuesday.

The championship game will be Saturday at 8 p.m.

Ferrum women's team is seeded third in the tournament. The Panthers (15-8, 9-3) entertain No.6 Greensboro in a first-round game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

In other first-round games, No.4 Methodist plays No.4 Shenandoah and seventh-seeded Averett faces No.2 N.C. Wesleyan.

Top-seeded Christopher Newport meets the Methodist-Shenandoah winner in a semifinal at Methodist on Friday.

The women's championship game will be Saturday at 6 p.m.
